One way to relieve the symptoms of arthritis is through the soothing warm waters of a hot tub, according to Derek Andrews, aged 83, a regular hot tub user for almost 25 years. Arthritis is a serious disease that causes pain and loss of movement required for everyday activity. There are more than 200 types of arthritis and rheumatic diseases. People of all ages, including children and young adults, can develop arthritis. Treatment may include medications, use of heat and cold and, for some, surgery to reduce pain or maintain movement. Derek Andrews and his wife, Diana, 7x have been regular users of a hot tub installed on the patio of their four bedroom detached house in Hindhead, since 1982. Provided by Hindhead Hot Tubs, Hindhead, Surrey, they turned to the company to upgrade the original cedar hot tub to a more sophisticated 4ft teak model. Derek says I enjoy exercise such as tennis, but find movement in my hands and my right knee can be painful for periods of several weeks, preventing me from playing. I find that the hot tubs warm waters help, reduce swelling around the joints in my fingers, relieves the pain and makes movement easier. The beneficial effects of bathing in warm waters have been recognised since Roman times. This is backed by recent clinically proven research, suggesting when you plunge into a spa or hot tub, the warm, bubbling massaging waters can reduce blood pressure, improve circulation, ease aching muscles and joint inflammation. Diana, who is a keen gardener, also enjoys using the hot tub. Diana says: Although I dont suffer from arthritis I find the bubbling waters superb for relaxing aching muscles. We both particularly enjoy its warmth in winter. The teak hot tub, situated on a patio close to the house, is sheltered on three sides and is surrounded by decking. This is complemented by a collection of potted ferns and other plants to provide the feel of a sheltered oasis of calm, which they use practically all year round. Derek says: I find more of a problem in winter with arthritis and I particularly find it beneficial, soaking in the warmth on a cold miserable day. It makes me feel really glowing for hours afterwards. Derek adds In summer, I particularly enjoy the combination of moderate exercise particularly a game of tennis and relaxing in the hot tub afterwards.
